Today we will get acquainted with the modular Mesh Wi-Fi system TP-Link Deco M5. Finally, these devices are presented in our market, and I have the opportunity to test them and make a review. In this article I will try not just to tell about the Mesh Wi-Fi system from TP-Link. About the technology Mesh Wi-Fi, I already told. But there I considered only technical characteristics, since I did not have the system myself.

TP-Link Deco M5 is a modular Wi-Fi system with support for Mesh technology. The advantage of this system and the Mesh Wi-Fi technology is that we can build a Wi-Fi network from the number of modules we need. And most importantly, the modules of the Deco M5 system are interconnected wirelessly, without cables and create a single Wi-Fi network with seamless roaming. This means that when you move between the modules of the Mesh-system, your device will not lose the Internet connection for a second. What can not be achieved using a conventional Wi-Fi router and repeater.

You can at any time expand the Wi-Fi network and increase the range by simply adding another module. The TP-Link Deco M5 system comes in three packages: 1, 2, or 3 modules. If you have, for example, a two-room apartment, you can purchase a set of two modules (perhaps even one will be enough). If, after setting up, it turns out that coverage is not available in all apartments, then you can purchase one more module.

For large apartments and houses, such a system is the best solution. Three modules of the Deco M5 system provide coverage up to 510 sq.m. Two modules – up to 350 sq.m. According to my observations, one module covers the same territory with a signal as the TP-Link Archer C2 router, but the speed is much higher (precisely with a weak signal). All modules in terms of features and capabilities are exactly the same. That is, in this system there is no main module (as a router and repeater).

The modules of this system work on a 4-core processor. They have 32 MB of permanent memory and 256 MB of RAM. For broadcast Wi-Fi signal meet 4 built-in antennas. Powerful  hardware provides greater network bandwidth. The manufacturer promises to simultaneously connect more than 100 devices.

Each module has two LAN / WAN ports. There are gigabit ports (speeds up to 1000 Mbps). Internet can be connected to any port on any module.

Wi-Fi with dual band support (5 GHz and 2.4 GHz). Support 802.11 ac standard. Speed: up to 400 Mbit / s at 2.4 GHz and up to 867 Mbit / s at 5 GHz. The work of Wi-Fi in two bands is very well organized. One network, one password. But the device connects to the network at the fastest available standard (which the device itself supports). If the Wi-Fi module in the device does not support 5 GHz, then it will connect to the network at a frequency of 2.4 GHz.

There is support for MU-MIMO, AP Steering, Beamforming, Band Steering and Auto Path Selection technologies.

Power adapters, cables, modules themselves – everything is done very well. Very good quality plastic and assembly. Cool design. Nice to unpack and connect.

The modules themselves are made entirely of white plastic. Top and bottom matte and glossy sides. At the top there is one indicator that may light / flash in yellow, green, blue and red depending on the state of the device.

I think that it is still possible to compare the Wi-Fi router and one Mesh Wi-Fi system module. But there is no point in comparing several modules and a bundle of router + repeater. With the help of Wi-Fi amplifiers, it will not be possible to build such a large, stable and fast Wi-Fi network, as this can be done using TP-Link Deco M5. And not least, it will be a seamless Wi-Fi network. And at the cost of a good router and a few repeaters are unlikely to be cheaper Mesh-system. Moreover, these systems have just begun to appear on the market, and their prices should fall.

Smart bulbs from TP-Link: connection, configuration, management

Recently I got acquainted with smart bulbs from the company TP-Link. I want to share with you my impression and tell what kind of devices and how they work. I’ll show you how to connect an intelligent light bulb and control it from a mobile device through a special application. Perhaps you are thinking about buying a smart bulb, but do not fully understand how these devices work and how they differ from “unintelligent” light bulbs. Where they can be used and what are their advantages. Now I will try to clarify this matter a little.

In the line of smart bulbs, which are presented in our market, there are four models: LB100, LB110, LB120 and LB130.

TP-Link LB100 is the youngest model. The aperture is 600 lumens. Power consumption 7 W. The color temperature is 2700K.
TP-Link LB110 – compared with the first model slightly increased light output (800 lumens). Power consumption 10 watts. The color temperature is also 2700K. There is a function of monitoring energy consumption.

TP-Link LB120 – brightness of 800 lumens. Light temperature 2700K – 6500K (in this model it was possible to change the settings of the heat of light). Power consumption 11 watts. Circadian mode, in which the light bulb automatically changes the brightness and heat of light depending on the time (for simulating natural lighting).
TP-Link LB130 – this model has the ability to change the color (2500K-9000K and the full spectrum of RGB). Other functions and features that junior models have are also available.
All of them have excellent power saving, connect to your Wi-Fi network and they can be controlled from a smartphone or tablet, via the Kasa application. You can manage not only in the local network, but also via the Internet (through the account). If necessary, from different devices. All models have a brightness control function and the ability to configure on and off on a schedule. But depending on the model, there are differences in technical characteristics and in functions.

I have two light bulbs: LB110 and LB130.

I will show you the example of TP-Link LB130. The adjustment process for all models will not differ. The difference is only in the functions that are available after the setting.

We take a light bulb and screw it into our chandelier, floor lamp, sconce, etc. We turn it on using the switch. For normal operation, the bulb requires a constant power supply. The light will flash several times and will shine.

On your phone or tablet, install the Kasa app (from the App Store, or Google Play). Then we open the Wi-Fi settings on the phone and connect to the Wi-Fi network of the smart bulb. The network will be approximately with this name: “TP-Link_Smart Bulb_”. No password.

After connecting, open the Kasa application. You can create an account right away and enter it (to control bulbs over the Internet, even when you are not at home). Click on the “Add device” button. Choose the type of device. Instructions appear. Click “Next” and again “Next” (if the lamp is already on).

Then start searching and connecting to the light bulb. If your device is connected to a Wi-Fi network lightbulb, a field will appear where you need to set the name of the light bulb and click “Next”. In the next step, select the icon. We connect a light bulb to our Wi-Fi network. You must enter a password from your Wi-Fi. If you need to select another Wi-Fi network, just click on it and select your network from the list (the application automatically selects a Wi-Fi network with the strongest signal itself).

If you correctly specified the password from Wi-Fi and the light bulb was able to connect to your wireless network, then the connection process is completed. In the Kasa application, a list of devices will appear where the installed light will be.

How to reset smart bulb settings.

If the light bulb is on, but the Wi-Fi network does not distribute, then it is probably already configured. You need to reset the settings. This can also come in handy if you want to reconfigure the light bulb, connect it to another Wi-Fi network.
To make a reset, turn it off using the switch. And then turn it on and off 5 times. Turning on the light bulb, it should blink several times. This means that the settings have been reset to the factory settings.

Let me remind you that I connected the model LB130. And this means that if you have a different model, the settings in the Kasa application may differ. For example, there will be no color management. Switching the lamp on and off, as well as changing the quick settings (color and brightness, activating the circadian mode) can be done from the window where the entire list of devices is displayed. There you can also open Kasa application settings and manage your account. If you are logged in to the account in the Kasa application, the added devices are automatically attached to your account. And you can manage them through the Internet, not just from home (on a local network).

Selecting a light bulb will open the advanced settings. Where can I change the brightness and color (if you have a light bulb LB130). If you press the “AUTO-WHITE” button in the color settings, the circadian mode will be activated, which will automatically adjust the brightness and heat of light depending on the time of day.

By opening the settings of a particular light bulb you can change its name, icon and status. Disable remote access (via the Internet). Set the time settings and see information about the light bulb. There you can delete it.

By opening the “Schedule” tab, you can create a schedule that our smart bulb will shine on.

And on the tab “Usage” you can see the statistics on the power consumption.


There everything is intuitively clear. Despite the fact that the interface of the Kasa application is in English. I hope there will be a version in Russian and Ukrainian. I also would like to be able to create widgets on iOS-devices for quick management.

The light bulb is stable. It is always connected to the power supply (it should be so), I manage only from the phone. In principle, it can be used as a normal light bulb, turn it on and off through a switch. Cool device, I really liked it. And if I did not find an intelligent outlet, I use a smart bulb every day. I turn it on as additional lighting. By changing the color and brightness, you can create a special atmosphere in the room.

And if you have a whole day no one is home, the boiler can still be turned off for example at 09:00 and turn on at 16:00. Well, you can at any time include it remotely from your smartphone, through the application Kasa. And at the dacha it is not a substitute thing at all. Why heat the water all week, or wait for warm water for several hours after your arrival, if you can turn on the boiler in advance and your arrival will already be hot water. True, this requires a stable Internet.

You need to connect and configure our smart outlet. I have Smart Wi-Fi Plug TP-Link HS110, but for HS100 the instruction will not differ.

Install the Kasa app on your phone (from the App Store, or from Google Play). Important! To be able to control the outlet via the Internet (not only when you are connected to the router), you need to register an account in Kasa and enter it.

Plug the socket into the mains and wait until the indicator on the socket starts flashing yellow and green (if this does not happen, press and hold the button with the gear for 5 seconds).
Then on the phone go to the settings of Wi-Fi and connect to the Wi-Fi network, which will broadcast the outlet (until we configure it). Network without password. After connecting to the outlet open the application Kasa and click on the button “+” (add the device). Next, choose the type of device “Smart Plug” and click “Next”.

Next, check the connection to the outlet and a window will appear where you need to set a name for our outlet and select the icon (you can make your photo). Then you need to select the WiFi network of our router (most likely it will be selected by default) and specify a password from it. That the socket could connect to the Internet. Perhaps after the connection it will offer to update the firmware – agree.
When the setting is completed, the indicator on  Smart Wi-Fi Plug HS100 or HS110 will turn green. And the outlet itself will appear in the device list in the Kasa application.

Simply plug into the outlet the right device, the same boiler, and manage its power through the application from the phone.

As you can see in the settings, it’s not difficult to understand. Now I will show how you can see the power consumption, adjust the timer and the boiler (in our case) according to the schedule.

We click on our socket in the list of Kasa device devices and immediately see the current load on the network and the operating time of the device today. Let me remind you that this function is only available for the TP-Link HS110. If you click on these indicators, then more detailed statistics will be opened. And if you click on the button in the form of a gear in the upper right corner, then the settings of the outlet will open. There you can change the name, icon, remove the device and disable, or enable remote access.

There are three tabs in the application:

Schedule – you can add schedules to enable or disconnect the appliance connected to the socket by time and days of the week. This mode is ideal for setting up the boiler to save energy.

Away is the “no home” mode. There you can set the time at which the socket will turn your device on and off. For example, lighting. When you are not at home, but you need to create the appearance that there is someone there.

Timer – the usual timer. Set the time that the socket will turn on, or turn off our device.

Let’s take a closer look at setting up the schedule, since this function interests us the most.

Go to the “Schedule” tab and click on “+” to add the schedule. From below we select the days in which this rule will work. For example, from Monday to Friday. Then choose the mode. ON – power on, or OFF – power on. And set the time in which this rule will work.

For example, if we need the boiler to be turned off from 22:00 to 05:00, then you need to create two rules. The first one will turn off the boiler at 10:00 (PM), and the second switch it on at 5:00 (AM).

You can create two more rules that will turn off the boiler at 9:00 AM and turn on at 4:00 PM. These rules can be turned off, edited, or deleted.

You can also manually turn on and off the power through the socket using the button in the application.

In this way, you can connect absolutely any device, not just a boiler. Just do not forget about the technical characteristics of the outlet and the connected device (load and power).

TP-Link TL-MR6400 3G / 4G LTE Wi-Fi router review

To organize access to the Internet through a mobile operator’s network, now you do not need to buy a modem, select a router for it, or use your smartphone as a modem in modem mode (which is not very convenient and not always possible). We only need a TP-Link TL-MR6400 router and a SIM card for any operator. And in a few minutes we can get fast internet on all our devices, where there is 3G / 4G coverage.

TP-Link TL-MR6400 is a conventional fixed router, but with an integrated 3G / 4G modem and a SIM card slot. And it’s very convenient. You can not connect a wired Internet anywhere. Especially in villages, in the country, etc.

There are many places where the only way to connect to the Internet is a 3G / 4G network of one or more operators. And if earlier we needed to buy a USB modem for a SIM card of a certain operator and look for a router that will work with this modem now it is possible to install TP-Link TL-MR6400 and just insert a SIM card into it.

I do not know how it actually is, but the 3G / 4G signal reception from the router is better than the smartphone.

The setting is very simple. I did not even set up an internet connection. Simply inserted a SIM card, turned on the router and he immediately began to distribute the Internet. You just need to set a password to protect the control panel of the router and set the Wi-Fi network settings (not necessarily, but desirable). Settings in English, but to understand them is not difficult. The control panel is new (in blue tones).

On other sites I saw information that the antennas are removable. But this is not so. I do not know, maybe it depends on the hardware version. Let me remind you that I have TL-MR6400 v3.

How does the TL-MR6400 work with a SIM card?

I just inserted the operator’s SIM card in the slot (new card, 4G) and the router immediately started distributing the Internet. Three indicators indicate the level of the signal. In my case, it was the maximum. On the phone in this place the signal is not maximum. Hence the reception of the router is the best.

The control panel displays detailed information on the connection to the mobile network. Network mode (3G / 4G), signal strength, connection status, and so on.
The incoming speed is 47 Mbps. But as I understand, this is far from the maximum speed. I saw feedback that you can squeeze 70-80 Mbit / s and even more. I think a lot depends on the operator, the signal level, the base station.

The conclusions:

If you have the opportunity to conduct normal cable Internet – conduct. In this case, this router is not very suitable for you. There is no point in overpaying for a functional that you will not use. If in your home, at work, etc., you can connect only the mobile Internet, the TP-Link TL-MR6400 is an excellent solution.

It is difficult to imagine a modern family, which would not have a home device with support for Wi-Fi. Moreover, the vast majority of you have several smartphones, and for work and entertainment uses a tablet and / or a laptop.

The level of development of wireless networks has reached a level where the speed of data exchange has ceased to be the main problem. At the same time, a different problem has come to the fore: communication range and coverage area.

Anyone who is familiar with wireless networks knows that as the range increases and the number of obstacles increases, the connection speed drops. Of course, much depends on the layout of the premises, the materials of the walls and their decoration. For this reason, the signal level and the quality of the coating in different rooms is significantly different.

– All devices from the kit are full-fledged routers. Yes, there is no mistake, all the devices in the kit are completely identical, and among them there is no “main” device in the initial configuration.
This means that you can get any of the devices out of the box and use it as a router. Moreover, you can install 2 devices, and give the third device or give it to your friend. In this case, all devices will be completely independent of each other.

Each device is equipped with a powerful 4-core ARM-processor, whose core runs at a frequency of 710 MHz. At the disposal of the processor there is 512 megabytes of RAM and built-in storage for 4 gigabytes.

– Support for the newest standard. Many do not fully understand why this parameter is so important. The thing is that Google WiFi is not an ordinary AC1200 router, it supports the second generation of the 802.11ac standard – 802.11ac Wave 2.

– Support for Dual-band. All devices are dual-band, so they can simultaneously work as obsolete clients (802.11a / b / g / n), and with modern (802.11ac). Support for two bands increases the network capacity and the number of possible connections.

Google Wi-Fi is uniquely one of the best solutions in the market for home Mesh devices. Excellent coverage and performance, thoughtful design, gigabit interfaces, unique functionality. All this and many other factors fully justify the high cost of the device.

Wi-Fi Mesh system vs. router and repeater : what to choose ?

When the router is not enough (in terms of covering the Wi-Fi network), the most optimal solution is to install a repeater. You can use another router that can work in the Wi-Fi network amplification mode, or additional access points that connect to the master router by cable, which is not always convenient. The usual repeater also clones the settings of the main Wi-Fi network, and the wireless network is like one, but in the bunch of the router + repeater there are two big minuses, in comparison with the modular Wi-Fi networks.

Well, if you used a Wi-Fi network in which there are repeaters, you probably know how unstable this network is. Repeaters can be disconnected, lose connection to the main network, or create problems when connecting devices.

Repeaters do not create a seamless Wi-Fi network. You can build a real seamless Wi-Fi network only with the help of the Wi-Fi Mesh system.

In this article, I plan to introduce you to Wi-Fi Mesh systems. I’ll tell you what these devices are, how they work, what their advantages are and how they differ from ordinary Wi-Fi routers. The technology is uniquely very interesting and for it the future. I think that such a modular Wi-Fi Mesh system will soon replace the usual routers, because in their purchase there will simply be no sense.

I think, in time, all wireless network devices will do with the possibility of combining them into a cellular Wi-Fi network.

What is Wi-Fi Mesh system network ?  How does it works?

The word Mesh has many meanings. One of them is the network cell. Mesh networks are a complicated thing. But in the form of ready-made systems, these are very simple and understandable devices.
Mesh systems consist of modules. Each module (a separate device) is approximately like an ordinary router. As a rule, these systems are sold in different delivery packages. You can buy a set of one, two, or three modules.

All modules in Mesh systems are the same and equal to each other. There is no main device to which additional modules are connected (like a router and repeaters). We can deliver one module, and its operation, in principle, will not be different from the work of a conventional Wi-Fi router. But if we need to, we buy one more exactly the same module, plug it into the socket, and in just 30 seconds they connect to each other and begin to work in pairs. Typically, on each such module there are several LAN ports, so that they can be connected to devices via a network cable. All these modules (cells) create a single, high-speed, seamless Wi-Fi network for the whole house, yard, apartment, office or other room. Due to the modular system, the coverage radius of the Wi-Fi network is very large. There are no “dead zones”. You can add as many modules as you need.
